Atlas öfver Finland, Second Edition

This is the second edition of the national atlas of Finland and overall third national atlas ever published meeting the requirements for national atlases defined by the Commission on National Atlases under the International Geographical Union.

Since the first edition the number of maps have grown considerably from 32 to 55. Most of the maps from the first edition were completely reworked or at least thoroughly revised and improved. As the introduction states, some maps and the charts have been constructed also thanks to the help of the general public. It also states that the atlas aimed to teach the Finnish society about themselves and their country, which is the basic condition for self-conscious progress.

The atlas contains maps and charts about physical geography, geology, meteorology, hydrography, flora, demographics, population, education, culture, agriculture, industry, economy, history, communication and more. Unlike the first edition, the last four double pages contain charming, colourful and very detailed maps of altogether 38 Finnish cities. The atlas also contains a list of cities and districts with their area and population.

The name of the atlas and the introduction is written in Swedish language (which was the main language of the culture, arts and business in Finland at the time), but the map legends were written also in Finnish and French language. Along with the atlas, 2 volumes of text have been published individually in Finnish, Swedish and French languages.
