Welt Seuchen Atlas I - Atlas of Epidemic Diseases

The World Atlas of Epidemic Diseases, or Welt Seuchen Atlas in German, is a book published in 1952 in Germany. The book is a comprehensive guide to the history of epidemic diseases that have impacted humanity over 19th and 20th century.

The authors provide detailed information about the diseases that have affected each region, including the symptoms, the mortality rate, and the historical context in which the epidemics occurred.

The World Atlas of Epidemic Diseases is a valuable resource for understanding the impact of epidemics on human history. It provides insights into the causes and consequences of epidemics, and highlights the ways in which disease outbreaks have shaped human societies.

One of the key features of the book is its focus on the role of geography in the spread of disease. The authors demonstrate how factors such as climate, population density, and trade routes have influenced the transmission of diseases throughout history.

The World Atlas of Epidemic Diseases is also notable for its inclusion of lesser-known diseases that have had a significant impact on human health. For example, the book describes the outbreak of encephalitis lethargica in the early 20th century, which affected millions of people worldwide but is often overlooked in discussions of epidemic diseases.

Majority of the maps (38) show the origin, spread and mortality of the diseases like typhus, cholera, hepatitis, relapsing fevers, leprosy and more. Two maps are showing the density of population in Europe and last 12 maps are general relief maps which were used as a base for the main maps. Each map folds out to the size of 65 x 48 cm and occasionally has numerous small scale statistical maps on the verso.

Overall, the World Atlas of Epidemic Diseases is a valuable resource for historians, medical professionals, and anyone interested in understanding the impact of epidemics on human history. Its detailed descriptions of diseases and their historical context provide a unique perspective on the topic of medical geography.
