Meyer's Zeitungs-Atlas

1852
Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen

Full title

Verzeichnis und Reihenfolge der Hundert und Drei und Zwanzig Karten in Meyer's Zeitungs-Atlas

Meyer's "Zeitungs-Atlas" (translated as "Newspaper Atlas") is a notable historical cartographic work that was published by Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen between 1849 and 1856. This version with 123 maps was published between 1849 and 1852 and contained about 70 maps from the preceding Meyer's Universal Atlas. The atlas was published in 31 installments and the binding had to be done by the owner on their expense after receiving the last installment, therefore no official unified binding of this atlas exist and every bound copy looks different.

The maps are admirable for the level of detail provided in relatively small format. The typical feature of Meyer's atlases including this one was the presence of large quantity of inset maps with plans of cities and urban areas, which made the atlas unique compared to its competitors. Mainly European maps also feature tables with statistical data about population, administrative divisions or highest mountains of the region. Most of the maps were engraved by Radefeld and Renner. Renners's map are especially detailed, with geographical names were as small as 0,6 mm in height, making it almost impossible to read without a magnifying glass.

The atlas is divided into 3 sections. The section with historical maps contained 9 maps, the modern geography was covered in 96 plates and the atlas also contained 17 thematic maps on physical geography, climate, plant biology, magnetism, physical geography etc. One plate was dedicated to astronomy. Two of the modern geography maps are dedicated to London and Paris neighbourhood.

The atlas was later renamed To Meyer's (Zeitungs and) Groschen Atlas - because each maps cost 1 Groschen - and the number of maps was increased.
