Justus Perthes Gotha

Full title

Justus Perthes See Atlas. Mit 41 mehrfarbigen Karten und einer Darstellung der wichtigsten nautischen Fragenmit 190 Abbildungen im Text und auf Tafeln. XIV. Auflage

Fourteenth edition of the "Sea Atlas" published by Justus Perthes during the height of the World War 2. The atlas apparently targets mostly the younger audience in hopes they will be attracted to the navy and become involved on various positions, as one can clearly see from this excerpt from the foreword:

"Even today, during the war, the shipping cabins hire cabin boys. Our Navy, however, offers every young German who has his heart in the right place the opportunity to work on the seas for German's future in numerous maritime and technical careers."

The atlas begins with 96 pages of information about weather, navigation and ship knowledge, followed by 8 double page charts of schematic ships illustrations, overview of navigational symbols and charts.

The map section begins with 17 maps about history of the sea voyage and naval operations (mostly during the First World War), followed by 2 celestial charts, 4 thematic maps about weather, climate and magnetsim. The remaining maps are various general maps of the seas and oceans and clusters of inset maps portraying important ports around the world, including two very attractive polar maps.
